Considering CO2 laser? What to understand before booking

CO2 laser is discussed as a resurfacing procedure, but the name alone does not tell you how intensive a proposed treatment will be. Devices can be used in different ways, settings vary and the plan should be matched to the concern and the individual.

Before booking, make sure the conversation goes beyond a treatment label.

Ask what device and mode will be used

Request the name of the device or system and an explanation of how the planned treatment works. Ask how the settings are selected and what training the practitioner has with that equipment.

The aim is not to become a laser expert. It is to understand what you are consenting to.

Be specific about the concern

“Skin rejuvenation” is too broad to set a useful expectation. Is the conversation about texture, the appearance of a scar, uneven-looking tone or something else? Ask what degree of change may be realistic and what the treatment is unlikely to change.

Persistent, unusual or changing lesions require medical assessment rather than a cosmetic laser appointment.

Discuss skin tone and pigment history

Post-treatment pigment change is an important part of laser suitability. Tell the practitioner about your natural skin tone, tanning, recent sun exposure, previous pigment changes and reactions to earlier treatments.

Plan for recovery without relying on a fixed number of days

Recovery depends on the device, settings, treatment area and individual response. Ask:

  • What will the skin look and feel like immediately afterwards?
  • When can skincare, make-up, exercise and sun exposure resume?
  • Which aftercare products are recommended or should be avoided?
  • Which symptoms require prompt contact or medical advice?

Schedule around the cautious end of the range you are given, particularly before an important event.

Check the support route

Know who to contact if healing does not follow the expected pattern. Ask whether follow-up is included, how concerns are assessed and what happens outside normal hours.
